The 2022 Running Season Review

My training events for 2022 far exceeded the expectations I set for the start of the year.

I knew as early as February, doing the Clane 5k, where I surprised myself by managing to knock 1:15 off my PB, that I was on for a great year. It was also the first time I felt a sub 20 5k was a realistic goal to have.

The 4x4x48 challenge back in March was a weekend adventure I’ll never forget! From raising over €3000 for Curragh Hospice to everyone I ran with along the different locations, I already have nostalgic feels looking back on it.

10k PB of 42:30, 59k Cycle/Run/Kayak that is Quest Glendalough and just under 1 hour 32 mins for a half marathon followed 4x4x48 before some sub 20 5k failed attempts after seeing more clearly (literally seeing more clearly after eye surgery!)

Cycling over 180k in Kerry was pretty cool, as was doing my first ultra marathon… an 80k Ecotrail in September that took over 11 hours through Wicklow mountains to complete!

Then came the marathon(s). 2 in the same month. That part was definitely not planned at the start of the year! Neither was doing an 80k the week before the first of two marathons in a month.

As great as Galway was to knock 12 mins off the PB, nothing compares to running in Dublin 4 weeks after it. I knocked another 7 mins off the time, hitting the main goal I has set out for myself at that start of the year - a 3:30 marathon.

Fitness wise, an unbelievable year, unlike any other to date. From doing events and having support on and off the tracks from great people. After all the cancelled events of the previous year, I wanted to try to make up for that in 2022. I think I did!

Next year the two main goals are that sub 20 5k and run 100 miles in 24 hours! And there’s few more fitness challenges are already started to sneak into the calendar!

But before all that, I’m off for a Christmas bucket list long weekend to start the wind down of 2022!

And then…
