16 Weeks to Dublin Marathon Podcast: Any Given Runday

This week’s episode of the Any Given Runday Podcast is available on Spotify HERE and Apple Podcasts HERE

Somehow it's already 16 weeks to the Dublin Marathon, so on this week's episode, I talk with my co-host of the Any Given Runday Podcast, Eric, about our tips for a training plan for the marathon, highlighting where we felt we went right in the past and the mistakes we made so you don't have to.

Eric and I have slightly different approaches to our marathon training. Yes, we are all about running slow to go fast (although it took me a lot longer to adopt this philosophy), but Eric takes his heart rate training to the next level. He talks about his training being about time and heart rate more so than incremental distances and keeping it conversational pace for roughly 80% of the time.

While this podcast episode is definitely tailored to those doing their first or second marathon, we feel there is something there for everyone.

After the 5 minute intro to this week’s podcast episode, we discuss:

- Breaking down your first week of training for the marathon at different levels

- Why Eric thinks you should NOT run on a Monday

- Heart Rate Training vs Distance each week

- Cross Training

- When you should and when you should NOT incorporate gym work into your marathon training

- Using Strides in your training

- Yoga/Stretching/Swimming

- Breaking down Interval Sessions

- When you should set your marathon time goal and why Seán and Eric disagree on this one

- Are Saturdays for the hills?

- The importance of the long run and how long the long run should go for

- Why having your long run on a Sunday morning solves future problems

- How to measure the increasing intensity of the long run

- Thoughts on when to taper for a marathon and how to include it in your training programme

- Mini tapering throughout the 16 weeks

- What to do if you miss a week of training

- Listening to your body: how to know when you need a rest day, or you need to run

- The most overlooked factor in training for a marathon

We're looking forward to seeing how everyone progresses in their training towards one of our favourite days of the year - Dublin Marathon Sunday!
